Digital health and AI

AI in healthcare is not about replacing doctors, but about changing how the whole system makes decisions

The important question is not “Can AI replace doctors?” but how data from hospitals, clinics and patients can be connected so that AI better supports both diagnosis and operations.

Many discussions about AI in healthcare still revolve around one question: “Can AI replace doctors?” In my view, that is not the most important question.

A more useful question

A more useful question is how data from hospitals, clinics and patients can be connected, so that AI better supports both diagnosis and operations, for example:

  • forecasting patient volumes;
  • optimising operating-theatre schedules;
  • detecting cardiovascular risk early from long-term data.

Technology woven into the whole care journey

This is the direction I am pursuing at Vinmec Da Nang: building a healthcare ecosystem in which technology does not stand alone but is integrated into the entire patient care journey.

The biggest challenge is not the technology itself, but changing the processes and mindset of an entire system. It is a governance problem more than a technical one.

I would welcome conversations with colleagues working in health technology or with a perspective on this topic.
